Chair yoga can be an excellent way to loosen and stretch muscles safely.

While yoga may be a valuable form of exercise for both the mind and the body, not everyone is comfortable with the balance and movements of traditional yoga. In this case, chair yoga may be worth looking into.

Chair yoga is a form of yoga that can provide similar health benefits while staying safely seated in a chair – rather than standing up or getting down on a mat. Most traditional poses can be modified for chair yoga.

To get started, make sure the chair you are using is stable. Ideally it would have a straight back and no arms. As with any type of yoga, loose-fitting clothing is best, and you can practice barefoot.

It’s important to listen to your body as you practice, especially as a beginner. While poses are generally safe for most people, everyone’s body is different. Poses should never hurt or strain. If they do, skip that step.
